The ECRUU Podcast: Skymet's founder on cracking the Indian monsoon

by charlotte | 16/05/2023, 09:10 | UNCATEGORIZED | 0 comments

This week, we interviewed Jatin Singh, Skymet's founder.

Jatin Singh is the founder and head of Skymet, India’s biggest private weather forecasting agency. Skymet plays a key role in monsoon forecasting, which in turn is key to predicting India’s cane crop, one of the biggest swing factors in the global sugar market. Skymet has also played a role in changing India’s approach to weather forecasting.

In this episode, Jatin shares with us how he got into weather forecasting, what it takes to run a weather agency, and the (political!) implications of forecasting India’s monsoon.  You can listen to the podcast here.

In this podcast you’ll find out:

-Skymet’s take on this season’s monsoon and upcoming forecast updates

-The limits of the current forecasts and what to look out for

-The difference between Skymet and the Indian Met Department (IMD) forecasts

-Why monsoon forecasting is political

-Why it’s so much harder to forecast rainfall in tropical regions

-How a weather agency make money
